Taking the two most recent features by Christian Petzold, Transit (2018) was executed in a too cerebral tone, harming, on one hand, the poetic-metaphorical amplifications that the plot might have; but, on the other hand, intensifying the political allegory intended by the filmmaker. Now, Undine (2020) is not yet totally free of a rationalizing harshness; but it goes a long way towards a sensitive, emotional, intuitive resourcefulness. The political allegory of the previous film gives place here to symbologies of a wider archetypal scope. Trigger alert for those who have thalassophobia (fear of large, deep and dark volumes of water).
